John Howard Association (JHA)-Non-for-Profit Prison Oversight Organization

    December 4, 2019

The John Howard Association (JHA) is an independent, not for profit, prison oversight organization. For 119 years JHA has been going into every Illinois prison to monitor for conditions of confinement, treatment of prisoners and availability and quality of programming.  We use our first hand observations, data collected from the Department of Corrections and interviews with people who are incarcerated as well as correctional staff to identify and report key findings and make recommendations for reform.  Our work lays the foundation for much of the prison reform work, both policy and litigation-wise, that happens in Illinois. JHA was founded on the principles that no closed system should be left to oversee itself and that it is critical for citizens to know what happens inside of prisons.  Our mission remains the same today, we fight for criminal justice and prison systems that are more fair, humane and effective.  For more information about who we are and what we do, please

JHA is looking for pro bono assistance in the areas of Human Resources as well as PR/marketing and communications. JHA values our Board of Directors, Young Professionals Board and volunteers, all of whom help us in areas where we may lack expertise or capacity.  We are always looking for new people to join the organization in these roles. If you are interested in finding out more about JHA and how you can use your skills and talents to assist in our work and support our mission, I welcome the opportunity to connect with you!
